This tour provides a fascinating insight into the milestones that marked the life of a simple and humble Jesuit priest from Buenos Aires who would surprise the world and become the first Latin American Pope.
10 DAY – Full Board Tour
Day 1: Airport Pickup, Hotel Check-in & City Tour of Buenos Aires (D);
Day 2: Origins of Pope Francis: Visit to birthplace in the working class area of ‘Flores’; ‘Mary of Perpetual help’ church where he was baptised; ‘Our Lady of Mercy’ church and adjoining school where he took his first communion and attended primary school; childhood Parish Church, ‘St. Josephs’ were he received his vocation calling as a teenager. At St. Josephs’ we will take part in Celebration of Mass; In the Evening we go to a Tango Dinner Show at the famous ‘El Querandi’ (B,L,D);
Day 3:Option A: Argentine Countryside: We get an insight into the famous Argentine countryside by attending the Gaucho Fiesta at Santa Susana estancia with Argentine BBQ, folklore show of music & dance and horse show (B,L,D);
Day 3:Option B: San Nicolas of Rosario: We board a luxury coach and travel to the city of Rosario to visit San Nicolas, famous Marian site. Here an ordinary housewife who had no formal education and no knowledge of the Bible or theology was visited by the Blessed Mother daily for a period of over 6 years. She also received 68 messages from Jesus Christ. Numerous healings, including the cure of a boy with a brain tumour, have been documented at this site. We will be given a guided tour of the site and take part in the celebration of mass. After dinner, we travel back to Buenos Aires (B,L,D);
Day 4: Seminary & Personal Insight: Visit the College ‘Maximo of San Miguel’ where Pope Francis studied and later taught philosophy and theology. As rector, he sheltered 'on the runs' from the military dictatorship. Includes lecture on Argentina’s political history by local historian. Also includes visit to Seminary Chapel and former living quarters of Pope Francis. We also talk to the Jesuit Brother Mario who is a close personal friend of Pope Francis and gives us a personal insight into the new Pope. (B,L,D);
Day 5: Nature & Protection of the environment: Visit the spectacular Tiger delta and waterway on a day tour that includes travel by boat and lunch in an unforgettable landscape; we also visit San Isidro Cathedral in the afternoon (B,L,D);
Day 6: A Poor Church for the Poor: Visit the slumps where he worked & has sought social justice for the poor. We visit the ‘Church of the Immigrant’ and are given a talk by the former secretary of Pope Francis by Father Juan who will give an insight into the type of social programmes implemented by the Pope whist Cardinal in Buenos Aires. Retrace his journey on the city’s public transport system where at the behest of devotees he regularly held mass & blessings. We attend the Mass for the poor at Consitutentes Train Station. (B,L,D);
Day 7: A Catholic Continent: We cruise over the River Plate on a fast ferry to the historic town of Colonia in Uruguay (UNESCO protected) where we take a comprehensive tour, whereby we will be given an insight into the importance of the Jesuits in bringing Catholicism to Latin America. We also visit the ancient Church of the Sacred Saint, the oldest church in Uruguay. (B,L,D);
Day 8: The Virgin of Lujan: Visit to ‘Lujan Cathedral’ in the province: place of the annual pilgrimage by more than six million Argentine Catholic devotees who walk 40 miles to be blessed by Pope Francis. Luján is best known for its large neo-gothic Basilica, built in honor of the Virgin of Luján, the patron saint of Argentina. We also visit and dine with the Benedictine monks of the Cono-Sur Congregation who reside at Abadía de San Benito on the outskirts of Luján. In addition to providing retreat facilities for the residents of the city, the monks support themselves by means of agriculture and publishing (B,L,D);
Day 9: Argentina – A Catholic Country. We visit the Metropolitan City Cathedral - where recently as Cardinal, Pope Francis held mass & lived nearby in a modest 1 bedroom flat; Casa Rosada & Plazo De Mayo, where we take a tour that gives us an insight into the political & religious history of Argentina (B,L,D);
Day 10: Transfer to Airport (B,L).
During the course of the tour, insight into the life lived by Pope Francis will be given by members of the religious orders. There will be a number of opportunities to participate in Mass celebrations. In addition, talks will be given on Argentina’s history and the role of the church on its culture and society.
